GEMS have been part of human history for over 20,000 years. They are naturally occurring materials desirable for their beauty, valuable rarity, and durability to give lasting pleasure. A jewel is a gem that is turned into a work of art either by the finish or the setting it goes into. While often defined as minerals created inside the earth, some gems are organics – created by living organisms. Very early gems - such as amber, coral, ivory, nuts, pearls and others - were generally organic.
